Yangon International Airport Transformed into Lawless Extortion Hub as Uniformed Personnel Launch Brazen Shakedowns

July 19, 2026

By Bywar Oo / MPA

YANGON, Myanmar — Yangon International Airport has systematically deteriorated into a lawless extortion ring run by state security personnel and airport staff, with uniformed officers staging high-handed shakedowns against inbound travelers under a variety of fabricated pretexts, frontline witnesses verified on Sunday.

The structural breakdown in checkpoint integrity follows aggressive regulatory crackdowns by the ruling military junta targeting foreign departures, import-export licenses, and air cargo supply chains.

In response to these tightening measures, a predatory coalition comprising Customs officials, Immigration (La-Wa-Ka) agents, and active-duty police personnel has begun aggressively targeting Myanmar nationals returning from overseas labor or holiday tours, alongside independent commercial cargo brokers.

Frontline passengers report that even when checked baggage adheres strictly to official airline weight metrics and legal dimensions, security personnel aggressively demand irregular cash payoffs. Travelers who refuse to comply are systematically subjected to targeted intimidation, administrative delays, or the arbitrary confiscation of their personal belongings.

A Myanmar national who recently arrived on a flight from Japan detailed the humiliating operational environment within the terminal grid.

“The behavior of the officers in police uniforms is particularly appalling; it has degenerated into shameless begging,” the passenger told MPA. “We all know bribery has historically existed here, but the current scale is unprecedented. I carried no restricted contraband, and my bags were well within the official weight restrictions. Yet, at every single security sub-station, police officers pulled me aside, demanding to know where I flew in from and ordering me to ‘leave a little something behind’ for them.”

“They surround you in groups, barraging you with demands until you pay up. I witnessed people being actively chased down the corridors by uniformed personnel demanding cash,” the traveler added.

According to a long-term airport employee who spoke to MPA on the condition of anonymity, institutional boundaries between departments have completely collapsed. Under standard operating protocols, specific personnel are barred from conducting physical baggage checks. Today, however, uniformed units operate with absolute impunity across all terminal zones.

“Normally, each employee has a legally defined perimeter and specific jurisdiction,” the airport worker disclosed. “For example, patrol police have no legal mandate to inspect baggage contents—that is strictly the domain of Customs. If a passenger has a customs issue, they settle it at the Customs desk and proceed. But now, every single uniform in the building, from security guards to officers, wanders across boundaries to corner passengers and demand money.”

The breakdown in airport management extends far beyond passenger distress, directly exacerbating the country’s severe economic crisis.

Amid crushing junta trade blockades across land borders and maritime routes, Myanmar is experiencing acute shortages of essential consumer goods, cosmetics, and life-saving medicines, driving domestic retail prices to historic highs.

Traders attempting to stabilize the market by flying in critical pharmaceutical batches state that extortion fees levied by corrupt airport authorities have skyrocketed completely out of proportion, rendering air freight operations commercially unviable and choking off remaining medical supply chains.

Independent civil watchdogs observe that while the Yangon International Airport Authority maintains official signage explicitly warning passengers not to provide extra tips or material gifts to staff, administrative oversight remains non-existent. By failing to execute disciplinary actions against uniformed extortion syndicates operating openly in the international arrival halls, the regime is effectively allowing its underpaid security personnel to weaponize their state uniforms as a tool for highway robbery, further isolating Myanmar from the global aviation network.
