Myanmar Junta Weaponizes “Aung San Family” Label at 79th Martyr’s Day to Deflect Six-Year Ban on Aung San Suu Kyi

July 19, 2026

By Ko Myo / MPA

YANGON, Myanmar — Myanmar’s military junta has sparked widespread public outrage after its state-controlled media apparatus systematically altered its official terminology during the 79th Martyr’s Day ceremonies, utilizing a military-linked proxy to claim representation of the “Aung San Family” while continuing to bar imprisoned democratic leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from her father’s memorial.

Official state television broadcasts monitored via the state-run Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV) on Sunday, 19 July 2026, highlighted Ye Aung Than and his spouse laying a commemorative wreath at the Martyrs’ Mausoleum in Yangon.

In a significant departures from preceding annual protocols—where state records explicitly noted that attendees were participating merely “on behalf of the General’s eldest son, U Aung San Suu”—the military council’s news anchors formally labeled the proxy delegation as the official representation of the “Family of General Aung San.”

Independent political observers monitor that the subtle language shift represents a calculated effort by the military council to leverage the historical legitimacy of independent Myanmar’s founding father.

By upgrading U Aung San Suu’s representative to the definitive “Aung San Family,” the regime is attempting to manufacture a false narrative of endorsement from the national hero’s bloodline to sanitize its ongoing military dictatorship.

U Aung San Suu, who resides abroad, has long maintained cozy institutional and legal relations with successive military regimes.

The state-backed rebranding stands in stark, cynical contrast to the systematic exclusion of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate and iconic civilian leader has now been forcefully barred by the military from attending her father’s national memorial service for the sixth consecutive year.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi remains held in absolute isolation by the military council following arbitrary, closed-door judicial sentences passed in the wake of the illegal February 2021 coup.

“The military junta is executing a dual-track strategy of political revisionism,” a Yangon-based civil society researcher told MPA under condition of anonymity.

“On one hand, they are actively erasing the country’s actual democratic leader from the national memory by trapping her inside a prison cell on Martyr’s Day. On the other hand, they are taking pliant collaborators who have no actual standing with the Myanmar public and dressing them up as the ‘Aung San Family’ to generate an illusion of historical continuity.”

Martyr’s Day remains a highly sensitive milestone on Myanmar’s national calendar, marking the tragic 1947 assassination of General Aung San and his cabinet colleagues just months before the country secured independence from British colonial rule.

Historically, the military high command has viewed the immense public reverence for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi during these ceremonies as a direct threat to its institutional authority.

Following the 2021 power grab, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing’s administration has aggressively sought to dismantle the political identity of the National League for Democracy (NLD) while weaponizing state symbols to project an aura of governance normalcy.

Human rights watchgroups evaluate that the regime’s reliance on stage-managed television optics highlights its chronic lack of domestic legitimacy.

As joint resistance coalitions deliver severe battlefield attrition against the military’s crumbling infantry lines across the country, the junta’s desperation to monopolize national history exposes its deep vulnerability, leaving the sovereign populace to dismiss the state’s rewritten ceremonies as an insult to the memory of their independence heroes.
