Outrage Sweeps Myanmar as Tycoons Behind Massive KBZ Banking Group Accept National Awards from Ruling Military Junta

July 4, 2026

By Cherry May

YANGON, Myanmar — Widespread public outrage and fierce condemnation from anti-junta revolutionary forces have erupted across Myanmar after the top executive sisters of the Kanbawza (KBZ) Group—the country’s largest private financial conglomerate—personally accepted a controversial “National Honor Award” from the ruling military council during Myanmar Women’s Day celebrations.

The high-profile accolades were conferred on 3 July 2026 by the junta’s National Committee on Women’s Affairs to Daw Nang Lang Kham, Chairwoman of the KBZ Foundation, and her sister Daw Nang Kham Noung, the foundation’s First Vice-Chairwoman. Political analysts and metropolitan residents view the public appearance as definitive, visual confirmation of the banking family’s deep institutional integration with the post-coup military apparatus.

The sisters hold primary leadership seats across the sprawling KBZ empire, which dominates the national economy through KBZ Bank and KBZPay, a mobile financial platform boasting over 22 million active users.

According to an official press statement released by the KBZ Foundation, the regime awarded the sisters for their extensive financial sponsorships within the education and athletic sectors.

Specifically, the foundation cited their roles as honorary patrons of the Myanmar Electronic Sports Federation (MESF)—assisting a national team in securing a gold medal at the 2025 E-sports World Cup—alongside a highly publicized 100-million-kyat ($27,000 USD) scholarship gifted to the top-scoring student in the 2026 national matriculation examinations.

However, geopolitical and military analysts look past the philanthropic messaging, evaluating the awards as a mutual transactional exchange engineered by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing to reward economic cartels that provide financial and public-relations cover to his regime.

“Min Aung Hlaing will consistently weaponize state honors to legitimize the crony groups keeping his military machine liquid,” a prominent political observer told MPA. “While millions of ordinary citizens are pushed into catastrophic poverty and war-induced displacement, these tycoons continue to expand their fortunes in direct partnership with the military. This isn’t a national honor award for the population; it is an award for serving the dictator’s tastes.”

The controversy has re-opened deep civilian grievances dating back to the immediate aftermath of the February 2021 military coup. During the countrywide Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), when thousands of urban citizens launched a strategic banking boycott to freeze state assets, KBZ Bank drew heavy public condemnation.

Operational logs from 2021 show the financial institution actively collaborated with the military council, providing user data to the regime and summoning police and military troops to interrogate staff and clients participating in pro-democracy protests.

“Their complicity has been absolute since day one,” a 40-year-old Yangon resident and former KBZ customer described to MPA. “They used their own banking infrastructure to help the military intimidate and crack down on everyday account holders. The founder, U Aung Ko Win, was just photographed traveling alongside Min Aung Hlaing during his official five-day diplomatic trip to China last month. These public awards simply solidify the history of crony capitalism in Myanmar.”

Independent human rights advocates note that while the KBZ Group aggressively deploys sports, social welfare, and education spending to systematically construct a benevolent public relations shield, the population remains highly conscious of the group’s underlying role. Facing continuous international scrutiny regarding corporate complicity in war crimes, independent analysts warn that no amount of junta-issued medals will protect the country’s prominent oligarchical families from eventual accountability under future civilian courts once the military dictatorship collapses.
