Resistance Comrades Warn Against Wrongful Identity in Assassination of Commander Pale Maung

June 29, 2026

By MPA

SAGAING, Myanmar — The parallel National Unity Government (NUG) has arrested and transferred a regional military commander to an undisclosed northern location as part of a high-stakes investigation into the internal assassination of a prominent PDF battalion chief. Hours after the arrest, the military junta launched targeted airstrikes on the commander’s base in Sagaing Region following the capture of breakaway resistance fighters.

Bo Swan Thu Maung, the Yinmarbin District Commander, was taken into custody over the weekend along with his entire executive staff on orders from the NUG’s Regional Military Command. The collective detentions follow the Friday assassination of Commander Pale Maung (also known as Peter) of Yinmarbin District Battalion 6, who was shot dead with a pistol during an official district coordination assembly. The fatal shot was reportedly fired by Swan Thu Maung’s personal assistant (PA).

“The arrest is genuine; he was detained within the district but has already been transferred to an upper northern zone for interrogation,” a frontline source told MPA. “He is not being held locally in Yinmarbin due to immediate and severe security risks.”

The internal crisis took a volatile turn on Sunday evening, 28 June. Intelligence logs confirm that a handful of fighters loyal to Bo Swan Thu Maung took a wrong turn into Kani Township’s Chaung Ma Village, where they stumbled into a junta perimeter and were immediately captured by regime forces.

Shortly after the captures, at 6:50 PM, the military council dispatched two jet fighters to unleash a heavy bombardment on Swan Thu Maung’s primary base camp in Salingyi Township. The precise timing of the airstrikes suggests that the captured fighters may have been forced to compromise the base’s coordinates under immediate torture.

The raid on the camp occurred just hours after the Alpha Column, a Salingyi-based elite resistance unit acting under NUG directives, entered the facility to arrest Swan Thu Maung and suspend his entire administration. Adding to public confusion, Swan Thu Maung’s official Facebook profile remained noticeably active, showing a “green light” status until 10:30 PM on Sunday night, triggering intense speculation across social media regarding the actual degree of his confinement.

While the NUG Ministry of Defence (MOD) issued a formal press release identifying the shooter as “Comrade Nga Phyo” and declaring his immediate disarmament, frontline whistleblowers inside Yinmarbin have raised serious alarms, warning against a potential miscarriage of justice.

“The reports circulating in the media claiming Nga Phyo is the shooter are inaccurate; the actual PA to Swan Thu Maung is a completely different individual,” a local resistance fighter told MPA. “If you watch the post-assassination interview footage that surfaced online, Nga Phyo is actually the one speaking in front of the lens. The person operating the camera, behind the scenes, is Swan Thu Maung’s true PA and the primary suspect. We are speaking out because the public needs to be vigilant—we cannot allow the real killer to escape accountability through political misdirection.”

The internal friction has reverberated across allied resistance sectors. On 27 June, the No. 1 Shwebo District Military Command issued an urgent manifesto condemning the perpetrators and their remaining accomplices for deliberately deploying fabricated audio logs and edited video clips across social media to manipulate public opinion.

Shwebo command stated that these heavily doctored media releases are a psychological operation designed to mask the gravity of the crime while systematically defaming the revolutionary honor of the fallen commander, Pale Maung, who was a respected former student activist from Monywa University.

“This is a deeply calculated, dangerous counter-revolutionary act that severely damages the integrity of the People’s Defence Force and harms the entire Spring Revolution,” the Shwebo District Command declared.

Expressing deep solidarity with the bereaved family, the command demanded that the NUG ensure an uncompromised, transparent investigation to bring both the immediate shooter and the high-ranking coordinators pulling the strings behind the scenes to absolute justice, urging the high command to deliver a “model punishment” to prevent future fratricidal violence within the resistance ranks.
