Resistance Commander Shot Dead by Fellow Fighter Inside Meeting, Myanmar’s NUG Vows Prosecution

June 26, 2026

By MPA

YINMARBIN, Myanmar — A high-ranking battalion commander of the anti-junta People’s Defence Force (PDF) was shot dead by a fellow fighter during an administrative meeting in Sagaing Region on Friday, sending shockwaves through Myanmar’s pro-democracy resistance architecture.

The victim, Commander Pale Maung of Yinmarbin District Battalion 6, was assassinated at approximately 2:00 PM during a strategic assembly involving multiple battalions from Pale Township. According to ground sources, the perpetrator was identified as a personal assistant (PA) to the Yinmarbin District Commander, Swan Thu Maung (also known as Bo Swan).

“All the battalions from Pale Township were called for a coordination meeting today,” a frontline PDF comrade who witnessed the aftermath told MPA. “While discussions were underway, the young assistant suddenly drew a pistol and fired directly at Pale Maung.”

Following a brief period of institutional silence, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) under the parallel National Unity Government (NUG) and the PDF General Headquarters released an emergency statement late Friday evening, confirming the fatality and the immediate arrest of the shooter.

The NUG identity matrix designated the suspect as Comrade Nga Phyo. The official report stated that Nga Phyo shot Commander Pale Maung with a pistol, causing the battalion chief to succumb to his wounds at the scene.

“The perpetrator, Comrade Nga Phyo, has been disarmed and is currently being held in strict solitary confinement at the Yinmarbin District Military Detention Center,” the NUG statement declared. “We will execute definitive legal actions against the accused in absolute accordance with established military judicial procedures and court-martial protocols.”

The parallel government noted that senior officials from the Sagaing Regional Military Command have arrived at the sector to conduct a comprehensive on-site investigation to prevent any potential retaliatory escalation between allied units. The PDF command also expressed deep institutional condolences to the bereaved family members and comrades of the fallen officer.

The assassination has triggered an outpour of grief across independent student unions and veteran activist networks.

Commander Pale Maung was a highly respected figure within the underground student movement prior to taking up arms against the 2021 military coup. He was a prominent former member of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABFSU) while studying as a Burmese language major at Monywa University.

Following the military crackdown on peaceful protests, he traveled to the ethnic borderlands, graduating under Intake 3 of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) training academy in Laiza—a specialized joint military program where both PLA and PDF cadres underwent combined conventional and guerrilla warfare training.

While interpersonal or tactical disputes within local defense groups have occasionally flared into physical confrontations over the past five years of a highly decentralized civil war, the targeted assassination of a prominent battalion commander inside an official administrative assembly represents a severe breach of resistance discipline. Military analysts suggest this internal crisis will test the NUG’s capacity to enforce uniform judicial accountability over its frontline security apparatus in northwestern Myanmar.
