YANGON, Myanmar — A powerful coalition of Myanmar’s democratic political stakeholders—including the parallel National Unity Government (NUG), senior parliamentary bodies, and frontline Ethnic Resistance Organizations (EROs)—has issued a scathing joint press statement expressing “deep concern” over ASEAN’s decision to convene an informal high-level ministerial meeting exclusively with the military junta, warning that the move severely compromises the regional bloc’s remaining international credibility.
The joint manifesto, signed collectively by 20 prominent pro-democracy factions, political networks, and regional consultative councils, explicitly slammed the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for failing to maintain a balanced, inclusive, and transparent diplomatic approach. The allies underscored that expanding high-level diplomatic pathways for a military regime while systematically reducing formal channels for the country’s legitimate democratic representation directly violates both the letter and spirit of ASEAN’s own Five-Point Consensus (5PC).
The resistance alliance outlined three critical structural points to the international community, highlighting that the pro-democracy movement has consistently engaged with successive ASEAN Chairmanships in absolute good faith through formal Stakeholder Engagement Meetings (SEM). Through these institutional meetings, democratic forces have successfully built common, cohesive political baselines covering the cessation of violence, humanitarian aid distribution, civilian protection grids, and the parameters required to foster a comprehensive political transition.
In stark contrast, the signatory groups pointed out that Senior General Min Aung Hlaing’s military administration has not only ignored its core regional commitments by mounting continuous air campaigns and aid blockades against non-combatants, but has now formally ripped up the regional peace framework altogether.
“On 9 July 2026, the military-controlled proxy parliament formally adopted a legislative motion explicitly rejecting the Five-Point Consensus itself,” the joint press statement revealed. “This is no longer a mere failure of operational implementation. It represents an overt, formal repudiation of ASEAN’s agreed political framework by the very party that ASEAN is now elevating through high-level diplomatic engagement.”
The resistance alliance noted the deep contradiction in ASEAN’s decision to reward an outlaw military cartel with official recognition while abandoning the constructive political actors who have continuously worked to advance the bloc’s goals.
The democratic stakeholders stated that a viable, comprehensive, and sustainable political settlement cannot be achieved by dealing with a single faction alone. They emphasized that a credible regional process requires direct, high-level consultation with all major democratic pillars.
The alliance demands that where diplomatic participation is necessarily restricted due to security protocols, representation must be independently determined through the democratic movement’s own representative coordination grids—such as nationally owned platforms—rather than through selective, externally dictated picking by foreign ministries.
The high-profile joint press statement secured signatures from the absolute bedrock of Myanmar’s contemporary anti-junta resistance. Prominent institutional signatories include:
- All Burma Students’ Democratic Front (ABSDF)
- Anti-Junta Forces Coordination Committee -Mandalay

The 20 unified signatories reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to working constructively with regional partners to guide Myanmar through a peaceful transition toward a genuine federal democratic union built on absolute human equality, shared sovereignty, and the self-determination of all indigenous peoples.
However, they issued a stern warning to the international community: continuing to appease a desperate military regime that openly insults ASEAN’s institutional guidelines will only exacerbate internal fragmentation, prolong the civilian humanitarian crisis, and destabilize the socioeconomic security of the entire Southeast Asian region.
