Claims of ‘Perfect Health’ Amid Total Isolation: Myanmar Junta Spokesperson Denies Access to Aung San Suu Kyi

June 30, 2026

By MPA

NAYPYIDAW, Myanmar — Myanmar’s military junta has claimed that ousted civilian leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is in “perfect health” and receiving regular medical checkups. However, the regime simultaneously reiterated that she remains legally barred from meeting any international envoys, compounding global anxieties over her prolonged isolation.

The assertions were made on Tuesday, 30 June, during a televised press briefing by Khin Khin Soe, the spokesperson for the junta’s unrecognized presidential office.

“There are absolutely no issues. She faces no hardships and is in fully robust health,” Khin Khin Soe told reporters. “Medical checks are being administered regularly and systematically.”

During the live broadcast, observers noted a rare verbal slip when the spokesperson briefly referred to the Nobel laureate using her popular vernacular nickname, “Daw Suu,” before quickly correcting herself to state her full official name, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

When pressed by journalists regarding recent diplomatic requests from the ASEAN Special Envoy to establish a direct audience with the 81-year-old leader, the spokesperson flatly dismissed the possibility, citing the regime’s manufactured judicial consensus.

“Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is an individual serving a criminal sentence under established statutory law,” Khin Khin Soe declared. “Consequently, she is legally restricted from receiving or meeting with international representatives.”

In the same sequence, the spokesperson added that if Senior General Min Aung Hlaing receives a formal invitation to future high-level ASEAN summits, the junta chief intends to participate personally—an ambition that directly flouts ASEAN’s current policy of banning political representatives from Naypyidaw due to non-compliance with regional peace frameworks.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was arbitrarily detained on 1 February 2021 during the military coup and subsequently sentenced to 33 years in prison following a series of closed-door, politically motivated trials. Following minor, symbolic sentence reductions, the junta announced on 30 April 2024 that she had been transferred from Naypyidaw Prison to a secured residential house arrest facility to serve the remainder of her term, accompanying the claim with a single released photograph.

Despite Tuesday’s administrative assurances of her well-being, independent monitors emphasize that the junta has completely severed her communication lines with her legal team and family for over two years.

This total information blackout prompted her youngest son, Kim Aris (also known as Ko Htein Linn), to initiate the global “Proof of Life” campaign, which reached its 70th day of silence this week. Just days ago, Kim Aris renewed his international appeals, stating that the regime’s continued refusal to grant independent consular or familiar access forces his family to remain deeply terrified for her immediate physical survival and medical stability amid extreme seasonal weather conditions.
