Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, has delivered a blunt warning to the international community, declaring that diplomatic rhetoric and empty statements are entirely incapable of halting the military junta’s escalating campaign of airstrikes against civilians.
Speaking at a UN headquarters briefing in New York on 19 June, following an update by UN Special Envoy Julie Bishop, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun called on the UN Security Council, the General Assembly, and ASEAN to decisively exercise their mandates through concrete, binding actions rather than non-binding consensus.
“Words cannot stop bombs,” the Ambassador stated unequivocally, emphasizing that existing resolutions, including UN Security Council Resolution 2669 and ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus, have been systematically ignored by the military regime due to a complete lack of enforcement mechanisms.
The Ambassador drew urgent attention to a structural shift in the military council’s battlefield tactics. Facing sweeping territorial losses on the ground to resistance forces, the junta has increasingly weaponized dual-use commercial technologies to sustain its aerial bombardment of civilian areas.
According to Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, the military is now heavily reliant not only on advanced fighter jets and armed drones, but also on modified commercial paramotors and gyrocopters to drop unguided ordinances on villages.
He revealed that hundreds of attacks utilizing these paramotors and gyrocopters had already been documented in the early months of 2026 alone.
To sever the regime’s operational capabilities, the Ambassador pressured member states to immediately enforce a total embargo on aviation fuel, financial flows, military hardware, and commercial dual-use components—specifically targeting parts used for paramotors and drones.
Accusing the military council of weaponizing humanitarian aid and blocking access to conflict zones, the Ambassador called for the urgent establishment of an alternative, parallel humanitarian mechanism.
He urged international donors to bypass junta channels and provide flexible, direct funding to cross-border aid networks to reach those in desperate need.
Furthermore, he urged foreign governments to officially recognize and directly engage with the Leadership Council for the Establishment of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF) as the legitimate representative of the Myanmar people, arguing that such a move is vital to supporting a Myanmar-owned, Myanmar-led transitional government.
“The people of Myanmar are sacrificing everything to build a peaceful, just, and democratic nation,” Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun concluded. “It is time for the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council to keep pace with the bravery of our citizens through immediate, actionable interventions.”
