Federal Unit Allocates War Chest as Military Campaigns Intensify in Sagaing

May 22, 2026

22 May 2026 By Ko Myo

MONYWA, Myanmar — The Interim Federal Unit Government of Sagaing has disbursed an initial military grant of 150 million Myanmar Kyat (MMK) to the Sagaing District Military Command to bolster ongoing defensive operations against the ruling military junta.

The formal funding transfer took place on Thursday, 21 May, following a strategic coordination meeting led by the interim government’s Prime Minister, U Soe Oo. The session brought together the region’s ministers of defense, home affairs, and planning and finance, alongside military officials headed by the deputy regional commander of the People’s Defence Force (PDF).

While the cash injection marks a step forward in institutional coordination among opposition groups, frontline fighters emphasize that the decentralized resistance movement faces a persistent, uphill struggle regarding financial sustainability and logistics.

“We have successfully managed to build a disciplined and structured People’s Defence Force, but our biggest vulnerability remains a chronic lack of operational funds,” a member of the local People’s Defence Team (local PDF/PaKaPha) based in Khin-U Township told MPA.

“To put it into perspective, a single rifle cartridge now costs upwards of 7,000 MMK (approximately $2 USD). Organizing even a small-scale tactical engagement presents a massive financial hurdle. We drastically need coordinated, multi-layered financial backing from both domestic and international solidarity networks to maintain our momentum,” the fighter added.

The release of the operational fund followed a broad financial coordination seminar held on 18 May. The session, organized by the interim Ministry of Planning and Finance, brought together regional tax collectors and financial administrators from various districts and townships to streamline revenue collection and distribution channels in liberated zones.

The fiscal mobilization comes at a time of extreme urgency for the northwestern resistance hub. Over the past fortnight, the military junta has deployed heavy infantry columns backed by air support into Kani and Budalin townships, initiating an aggressive scorched-earth sweep to dismantle opposition governance networks.

As the civil war enters its fifth year, the formal allocation of funds by the Sagaing Federal Unit underscores a growing transition within the resistance movement—shifting from scattered, independently funded guerrilla cells to a more centralized, state-like fiscal administration capable of financing large-scale conventional warfare.
