A mother and her young son have been killed in western Chaung-U Township, Sagaing Region, after the Myanmar military launched a kamikaze drone strike targeting a crowded public space.
The attack occurred at approximately 12:30 PM on 27 May 2026, hitting Hlaw Kar village. Resistance officials state the loitering munition was deployed directly from the military’s Northwestern Regional Military Command (known locally as Na Ma Kha) based in the neighboring city of Monywa. The blast also left two other civilians wounded.
“The drone detonated right beside a tea shop in the center of the village,” a member of the Chaung-U Township People’s Defense Team told MPA. “It is a busy market area lined with small retail stalls. The explosion instantly killed a mother and her child who were visiting the tea shop. The shop owner and his young son were also injured. There were no active clashes or military targets in the vicinity; the junta deliberately directed a kamikaze combat drone into a space filled with ordinary civilians.”
The victims have been identified as a 40-year-old local woman and her three-year-old son, both of whom died at the scene. The wounded individuals include the tea shop owner, aged around 40, and his four-year-old son.
“The injured are currently receiving medical treatment. The blast caused localized structural damage to the tea shop itself,” the resistance official added. “Because a kamikaze drone operates on precise guiding coordinates, its deployment into a civilian crowd has triggered severe anxiety across the community. Since the attack, the village streets have emptied completely. No one dares to step outside.”
Hlaw Kar village is located roughly 10 miles from the municipal center of Chaung-U and approximately 14 miles from the Na Ma Kha military headquarters in Monywa.
The drone strike follows a pattern of heavy weapons deployments targeting non-combatants in the township. On May 25, junta troops stationed within Chaung-U town discharged a 120mm heavy artillery shell that exploded inside Kyi Kone village, wounding four local residents.
