SAW, Myanmar — Thousands of civilians have fled their homes in the Yaw region of western Myanmar as military forces launch a major offensive aimed at capturing the strategic resistance stronghold of Mindat in southern Chin State.
The military push follows the junta’s successful reoccupation of Falam in northern Chin State on 25 April. Pro-junta propaganda channels, including People Media on TikTok and Telegram run by military lobbyist Kyaw Soe Oo, announced late Friday that government forces intend to “raise the national flag” over Mindat next.
Mindat occupies a critical logistical position. Military lobbyists and resistance sources both note that if the junta reoccupies the town, it could effectively choke off vital supply lines feeding resistance forces in Chin State, Rakhine State, the Yaw region, and the Pakokku plains.
“The military is executing a dual strategy: seizing urban centers while systematically cutting off humanitarian and supply corridors,” a local military source told MPA. “They are pushing forward in northern Chin State—targeting Tedim, Tonzang, and Hakha—while simultaneously squeezing southern strongholds like Mindat, Kanpetlet, and Kyindwe.”
In response to the rapid buildup, the Saw Township People’s Defence Force (PDF) issued an emergency directive on Friday evening, urging urban residents to evacuate to safer areas. The command warned that a major confrontation is imminent as revolutionary factions prepare to assault the junta positions newly established inside the town.
At least 10 villages in the vicinity of Saw—including Akgyi Katin, Anya Katin, and Kan Chaung—have been completely evacuated. “Junta troops have already occupied the empty quarters of Saw and are looting abandoned homes,” a 25-year-old local woman said. “The town is dead quiet right now, but everyone is waiting for the battle to start.”
The escalation comes in the wake of a Magway Region visit on 22 April by the junta’s newly appointed military chief, Ye Win Oo. Analysts believe the sweeping offensives across western Myanmar are part of a fresh blueprint designed by the new command to reclaim lost territorial networks.
Following his visit, the military deployed overwhelming ground forces and airpower to retake Falam. Now, with nearly 1,200 total troops concentrated near the Kyaukhtu artillery base and Saw township, the regime appears ready to employ the same heavy-handed tactics against Mindat.
As columns advance under the cover of artillery and surveillance drones, humanitarian groups warn that a prolonged siege of Mindat will trigger a catastrophic supply crisis, stranding thousands of displaced families in the rugged hills of western Myanmar.
