Resistance forces in Myanmar have seized a strategic military outpost near the Thai border, marking a significant tactical victory during the country’s traditional New Year festival.
The All Burma Students’ Democratic Front (ABSDF) confirmed on Tuesday that its fighters, alongside the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), successfully captured the Kyel Pyaung Kone base in the Mae Tha Waw region of Hpa-an District.
The operation, which concluded on the morning of 13 April—the eve of the Thingyan water festival—resulted in the seizure of a substantial cache of weaponry, including heavy artillery, small arms, and ammunition.
Military analysts suggest the fall of Kyel Pyaung Kone is a further blow to the junta’s presence in Karen State. The base’s proximity to the Thai-Myanmar border gives it added strategic importance for controlling cross-border routes and logistical lines.
The ABSDF released photographic evidence of the captured outpost today, showing victorious troops amid seized military equipment. The assault was carried out by personnel from the ABSDF’s Central Headquarters at Daung Taman Camp, operating in close coordination with their ethnic Karen allies.
While the Myanmar military has yet to comment on the loss of the base, the escalation of fighting in the border regions continues to displace civilians and poses an ongoing challenge to regional stability.
This latest victory highlights the growing operational synergy between student-led urban resistance groups and long-standing ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) in their protracted struggle against the military administration.
