Myanmar’s shadow National Unity Government (NUG) has announced the formation of three additional battalions under its Special Military Command, marking a significant step in the professionalization of its armed wing.
In a statement released on 24 February, the Special Military Command confirmed the official establishment of Battalion 8002 (Kanbauk Defence Force), Battalion 8003, and Battalion 9925 (Rangoon Warriors PDF).
The expansion reflects a broader strategic shift within the People’s Defence Forces (PDF). Military sources in Mon State’s Thaton District told the Myanmar Pressphoto Agency (MPA) that the new units are moving beyond traditional guerrilla tactics.
“In the early days, units were formed based on revolutionary spirit and focused on hit-and-run guerrilla warfare,” the source said. “These newer Ministry of Defence (MOD) battalions are structured to be a professional military force—disciplined, well-trained, and capable of sustained offensive operations. This is a major evolution for the PDF.”
Since its formation by the PDF General Staff in April 2025, the Special Military Command has grown to include five tactical units, 11 combat battalions, and five drone units.
Operating under the direct guidance of the NUG Ministry of Defence and the General Staff, the command follows a dual chain of command (COC) system. The expansion follows earlier organizational efforts, which included integrating local People’s Defence Teams (PaKaFa) from Yangon, Bago, and Mon State into three dedicated combat columns, as well as the formation of Battalion 8001 and the 1819 Drone Force.
The strengthening of these units suggests the NUG is preparing for a more conventional military confrontation with the ruling junta, emphasizing systematic training and centralized command and control as the conflict enters its fifth year.
