The Myanmar military has reportedly used explosives to destroy an underground hospital operated by the National Unity Government (NUG) in Mandalay Region’s Natogyi Township.
On February 18, junta troops launched a raid on the facility located near Pe Khin Gyi village. Following the seizure, the military units planted mines to systematically demolish the structure.
Despite the total destruction of the building, no casualties were reported. A local resistance member told the Myanmar Pressphoto Agency (MPA) that patients and medical equipment had been evacuated approximately two weeks prior due to nearby military movements.
The facility, which cost over 1,000 lakh kyats (roughly $47,000 USD) to build in 2025, had been providing essential healthcare services to local residents. “It is a great loss for the community,” the local PDF member stated. “At a time when it is difficult for people in this region to travel to urban areas for medical care, this hospital was a lifeline”.
Footage of the demolition was released on pro-military Telegram channels, showing the systematic blowing up of the underground complex.
In October 2025, the NUG’s Health Minister, Dr. Zaw Wai Soe, announced that the shadow government was constructing secure medical facilities—including 10 underground hospitals—to protect patients and staff from increasing military airstrikes targeting healthcare centers across the country.
The attack marks yet another instance of medical facilities being targeted in Myanmar’s ongoing conflict, which has seen healthcare infrastructure frequently caught in the crossfire since the 2021 military coup.
