December 27, 2025

By Than Lyan / MPA

YANGON — Members of the Karen community across the globe are marking their 2,765th National New Year today, with major celebrations taking place at the National Races Village in Myanmar’s commercial capital, Yangon.

The event, held on 19 December, drew large crowds of observers and participants as they gathered to honour one of the most significant dates in the Karen calendar.

The atmosphere at the National Races Village was electric, characterized by a mix of traditional sport and festive leisure. Central to the afternoon’s excitement were the Karen traditional boxing (Lethwei) matches, which remain a perennial favourite among spectators.

The festivities also included lighthearted competitions, such as pillow-fighting contests, which drew cheers and laughter from the throngs of visitors.

Traditional Don dances and various sporting events remain the indispensable hallmarks of the celebration, serving as a powerful display of cultural identity that continues to thrive today.

For many Karen people, the day is more than just a holiday; it is a vital expression of their heritage and a moment for spiritual and communal reflection.
