The National Unity Government (NUG) and the advisory National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) have agreed to hold regular bi-weekly meetings, a move aimed at resolving internal friction and strengthening revolutionary leadership.
The agreement was reached following a meeting on 25 January, where the NUG empowered its Political Coordination Commission (PCC) with a mandate to engage formally with the council.
Daw Hnin Hnin Mway, a spokesperson for the NUCC, told MPA that the regular dialogue is intended to pave the way for a broader alliance—or “United Front”—capable of navigating the intensifying conflict in 2026.
“We must strive to include not only the existing federal units and councils within the NUCC but also emerging groups,” said Daw Hnin Hnin Mway. “Since 2026 is expected to bring greater challenges, it is crucial that we build the strongest possible coalition.”
The spokesperson acknowledged that a key objective of the talks is to address disagreements and friction between partners through “frank and open discussion.”
The push for a consolidated front comes at a critical time. Currently, eight major stakeholder groups—including the former ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), the Karen National Union (KNU), the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP), and the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH)—have temporarily suspended their participation in the NUCC.
Re-engaging these groups and attracting powerful Ethnic Revolutionary Organizations (EROs) outside the fold remains a significant hurdle.
“Observers will be watching closely to see how they attract forces currently outside the NUCC, especially the powerful EROs,” a political analyst noted. “They understand that a ‘United Front’ cannot just exist on paper; it must have a tangible impact on ground control.”
While the diplomatic maneuvering takes place, those on the ground remain focused on results.
“Seeing the NUG and NUCC meet is a good start, but people want practical results more than just talk,” said a 35-year-old female logistics volunteer for the resistance. “What we need is more effective action against the military dictatorship.”
