YANGON, Myanmar — A Thai police officer’s public message wishing for peace in Myanmar and expressing a desire to visit the ancient heritage site of Bagan has sparked a wave of emotional gratitude across Myanmar social media networks.
In his widely shared message, the Thai official offered heartfelt prayers for the safety of the Myanmar people, adding that once peace returns, he hopes to personally explore the country’s rich cultural heritage and natural landscapes.
The goodwill gesture prompted an outpouring of warmth from Myanmar netizens, who responded with enthusiastic invitations.
“If peace returns and you visit Myanmar, name any place and I will host you for free,” wrote a Facebook user named U Thiha. “Myanmar hospitality never wanes. I will treat you to local spirits and guide you through the majestic pagodas of Bagan, officer.”
Deeply moved by the public response, the Thai police officer later posted a follow-up message expressing his joy and sincere appreciation for the overwhelming hospitality.
The exchange comes at a time of severe distress for millions of Myanmar citizens, who continue to flee across the border into neighboring Thailand to escape the military junta’s oppression and forced conscription laws. Migrant assistance groups estimate that around 7 million Myanmar nationals currently reside in Thailand.
Amid these hardships, many users took the opportunity to acknowledge the asylum and employment opportunities provided by the Thai public and authorities.
“While our nation is torn apart by military dictators, we are deeply grateful to every Thai citizen for allowing us to take refuge and earn a living,” another user commented. “When democracy is restored and peace prevails, we hope to invite Thai people to Myanmar and show them our beautiful homeland.”
Observers note that such genuine, peer-to-peer exchanges serve as a vital source of emotional solace for displaced communities, while fortifying grassroots ties between the peoples of both nations.
