Unjustly Detained Individuals Walk Free from Insein Prison

December 5, 2025

The Military Commission officially announced yesterday that it had granted amnesty and reduced sentences to a total of 3,085 prisoners who were serving sentences under Penal Code Section 505-A.

Of this total, 724 individuals were released on bond, while the remaining 2,361 had their sentences reduced. Furthermore, the Military Commission’s announcement stated that the cases of 5,580 individuals who had also been charged under this section, and subsequently charged under Criminal Procedure Code Section 512 for fleeing and absconding, were simultaneously dropped.

As a result of this amnesty, among those who had been detained, U Kyee Toe, a prominent figure in the Central Information Department of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party, along with student leader Ko Phoe Thar from the Basic Education Students’ Union (Ba Ka Tha), were released from Insein Prison today (November 27).

“I am ready to work with Auntie,” U Kyee Toe, who was released, told reporters outside Insein Prison.

The images of these political prisoners and activists, who have been unjustly detained by the military council and are now released, are a testament to seeing a ray of hope amidst immense challenges. Below are photo records of all the released individuals safely reuniting with their loved ones.
