MYITKYINA, Myanmar — The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) has issued an urgent evacuation advisory ordering all urban residents in Shwegu, southern Kachin State, to immediately abandon the town, signaling an imminent, high-intensity military offensive to capture the regime stronghold.
The formal military directive, published on Monday, 8 June, by the KIA’s Battalion 12, explicitly stated that the armed group will accept absolutely no operational liability or institutional responsibility for the safety of any civilians who choose to disregard the warning and remain inside the urban interior.
Regional monitoring groups and pro-democracy defense cells have urged the public to treat the evacuation order with utmost gravity.
“We have reviewed the official security document disseminated by the KIO/KIA today, and we are strongly imploring ordinary citizens to exercise maximum caution and secure safe shelter immediately,” stated a representative from the Bhamo Scout Team, a prominent regional underground network tracking frontline movements.
Alongside the mass displacement order, the rebel command has enforced an indefinite, total travel ban on key transport arteries controlling access to the sector. Effective immediately, both the primary Shwegu entry highway and the critical Nga Oh–Shwegu transport corridor have been closed to all civilian traffic. The KIA high command reiterated that anyone attempting to breach these sealed perimeters will face severe tactical consequences, for which the revolutionary forces will bear no responsibility.
To facilitate the exit of displaced families while sealing off battle zones, the KIA has designated a singular, restricted bypass route for humanitarian passage. Fleeing residents have been instructed to exclusively utilize the alternative rural corridor passing through Tawlan, Lan-Kuu, Si-Thar, Maing-Kint, and Si-Phwar.
Shwegu occupies a highly critical geopolitical node along the Ayeyarwady River, functioning as a vital logistics base and supply gateway for the ruling military junta to funnel reinforcements into northern Myanmar. Over the past year, the KIA alongside allied People’s Defence Forces (PDF) has systematically captured a network of military outposts surrounding the township.
As ethnic guerrilla forces move to isolate the remaining junta battalions dug in within the city center, military analysts expect a fierce war of attrition backed by heavy state air support, threatening to turn another major urban center into a volatile frontline in Myanmar’s ongoing civil war.
