A 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman have been killed after a Myanmar military fighter jet dropped a heavy bomb on a village in Tilin Township, Magway Region.
The attack occurred at approximately 13:30 local time on 10 March, targeting the southern side of a village school in eastern Tilin. Local sources described the ordinance as a 300lb bomb.
The male victim, who had recently married into another village, was reportedly driving back to his home village on an errand when the bomb struck. “The timing of his car passing coincided exactly with the explosion,” a representative from the local resistance group Yaw Alinn Tann told the Myanmar Pressphoto Agency (MPA). The victim died instantly from a fatal head injury, leaving behind a pregnant wife.
The second victim, a 22-year-old mother, was inside her home near the blast site when she was struck in the head by shrapnel. She died while being transported for medical treatment. She is survived by a one-year-old child.
Local sources emphasized that the attack was unprovoked. “There were no ongoing clashes or military activities near the village,” the representative added. “The area is also far from any established military bases”.
In addition to the loss of life, the airstrike caused two homes to be destroyed by fire, while three other residential structures suffered significant damage from the blast. Following the attack, residents briefly returned to extinguish the fires before fleeing the village in fear of further strikes.
The Myanmar military has increasingly relied on airpower to target regions in Magway and Sagaing, which have become strongholds for anti-junta resistance forces since the 2021 coup.
