NUG Government Addresses Corruption Scandal; Minister Highlights Struggles to Maintain Public Trust

February 21, 2026

By Chun Nrein / MPA

The National Unity Government (NUG) has confirmed that the suspension of its Permanent Secretary remains in effect as it investigates allegations of power abuse and corruption, with a senior minister vowing to uphold the integrity of the resistance movement.

Speaking at a press conference on 21 February 2026, Dr. Zaw Wai Soe, Minister of the Union Prime Minister’s Office, addressed the ongoing case involving Daw Kyi Pyar and her husband, U Nyi Nyi Min. He clarified that Daw Kyi Pyar has not been reinstated and remains under temporary suspension while further actions are pursued.

The case gained public attention after 19 former staff members filed complaints in November 2025, alleging corruption and the oppression of civil servants. The controversy intensified this week after a leaked internal letter—meant only for the involved parties—suggested that initial findings had cleared the official, sparking a backlash from the public and Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) groups.

“We arranged this press conference because we prioritize our people and the CDM staff,” Dr. Zaw Wai Soe stated. “The CDM is the vanguard of this revolution. Without them, NUG and our ministries simply cannot function. We stand as one with the CDM in the pursuit of justice and truth.”

In response to the growing public outcry, several CDM organizations had threatened to suspend cooperation with the NUG unless the matter was resolved transparently. The government, however, maintained that while investigative findings have been submitted to the Prime Minister, detailed interrogation records will not be made public.

During the briefing, Dr. Zaw Wai Soe also highlighted the personal sacrifices and financial hardships faced by NUG leadership to demonstrate their commitment to the public trust.

“Ask any NUG minister; salaries are a distant thought. We are doing this for the revolution,” he said, pointing to the austere conditions under which the shadow government operates. “We think twice even before buying new clothes. We are working with broken phones and cracked computers. I believe the people will understand our situation.”

Daw Kyi Pyar has contested the investigation, claiming the committee includes individuals with personal biases against her. Despite this, Dr. Zaw Wai Soe affirmed that the government would learn from this incident and continue to act with accountability and transparency to ensure the rule of law.
